Burdened by Peiri Ann

Burdened (Book 1)Book Description:
Tracey Warren has everything an eighteen year old girl should. She lives a life of expectancies; go to school, please her parents, party with friends, and revel in life as a young adult. That is until she experiences an unexpected life changing accident caused by Nathan Newcomb; an illegally attractive yet perplexed guy who has her fumbling over her words and cracking her head on the concrete. In being enthralled by his overwhelming existence, Tracey neglects his promise of death (which never falls short of Nathan) and in ignoring his guarantee, she chooses to give into love over sanity and risks her life for the opportunity of being with him.
Nathan, knowing the risks gives into this want to have Tracey presuming it may be better to jeopardize their possible ending, than to allow her to endure the pain of his devoid. Nonetheless, with him being a burdened Sephlem, not only are they burdened by their adversaries who will risk everything but the exposure of their existence to see Nathan fall. But Nathan and Tracey come to find that their most sinister enemies lie under their same roof and regrettably share the same bloodline.

My Thoughts:
I completely got lost in this book.  Tracey is a typical high school senior.  She and her best friend Glen are planning to go to a big party and both have 'crushes' on guys that goes beyond the norm.  Nathan isn't your average guy, but when he runs into Tracey (literally), their lives intertwine and they become pulled to each other.  Tracey doesn't understand it but Nathan does and tries to, at least somewhat, avoid it.  His family is different and has secrets and if Tracey chooses to be with him, it could absolutely put her life and his in danger.
I really, really liked Tracey and Nathan.  The two of them are good together, and even if they have secrets, they do work through their issues.  I really had issues with the other couple and Scott's keeping things from his 'mate'.  They intrude on Tracey and Nathan more often than not and it just gets completely out of hand!  There is romance, action, betrayal, and all sorts of things going on in this book that keep you intrigued.  The author did a good job with the characters and making the story flow well.  Some times the characters' personalities change a bit, but it doesn't take away from the overall story.  I will definitely be reading the next in this series to see what happens to the family.
Solid 4/5 for a mature YA or adult.  I wouldn't let younger YA readers read it just yet because of the adult content.

Protective Instincts by Shirlee McCoy

Book Description:

STALKED!

After losing her family, and then nearly her life when she was held hostage in Africa, grieving widow Raina Lowery only wants to put the past behind her. Instead, she's finding her son's toys in the woods and dodging a gunman's bullets. Raina is trapped in a real-life nightmare—until Jackson Miller reappears. Months ago, saving Raina was Jackson's job as a member of HEART, a private rescue team. But now it's personal. The hardened protector wants to give Raina—and himself—a second chance at love. But first he has to save her…again.

Mission: Rescue—No job is too dangerous for these fearless heroes

My Thoughts:
Wow, this was good.  Raina is bringing someone from her past back into her life to help him.  In the midst of that, she is being stalked.  Her husband and son have died, but she is finding her son's toys in the woods....and a mad man!  Jackson is bringing the past back to Raina in several different way.  He is the transport bringing the young man back into her life, but he is also part of the team that rescued her in Africa.  Now he is determined that he will rescue her again.
I liked that Jackson and the team worked well together, even when there was some tension between the members.  It was personal and forced to stay on that level and not move into the professional aspect of their interactions.  Raina has endured so much with Africa, her family, and just loss in general that you can understand how she would be hurting.  Maybe even how she would blame God for everything.  That being said, the author did a great job with this character, helping her grow and showing that there is more than just the small world that we become accustomed to seeing daily.  If we allow, God will use us and uses our past to shape us.
This was a 5/5 for me.  I had figured out who the 'bad guy' was, but I liked how it all unfolded.

White Witch by Trish Milburn

White Witch (Coven, #1)Book Description:

Witchcraft Is Her Family's Business. No One Quits The Family And Lives To Tell About It. "Jax" Pherson has power, enough power to know her future will end in service to the dark coven her father controls. Unless she can stay hidden in a small community in the mountains of North Carolina. She must find a way to live without magic and deny the darkness she feels welling up inside her-the same dark power that fuels the covens around the world. All she wants is a normal life. A boyfriend. Friends. Some place to belong, but all too soon Jax's barely begun new life hangs in the balance when she discovers that the boy she's attracted to is sworn to kill her kind. He's a hunter with good reason to kill everything that goes bump in the night. Even the most fleeting use of her power is tantamount to signing her death warrant and will bring both hunter and coven down on her. But can she walk away when her friends are threatened by an old evil? Something created by the magic of witches? Jax's only hope of survival is to convince the boy she loves to forget everything he's ever been taught and help her find a way to fight the covens. To believe there is some good in her.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this YA book.  Jax just wants to be a regular teenager, go to school, meet a guy, and just NOT be a witch.  She's left her coven, which will mean death if they find her, and is trying to stay under the radar.  She finally gets everything set up to be 'normal' and makes new friends....with the paranormal hunter hunk!  She is so attracted to him that it isn't funny and the feeling is mutual.  His cousin is her first friend but what will they do when they find out that she is one of the ones that he would be hunting.
I liked Jax.  She is trying to break out of what she has been taught to be her whole life.  She doesn't want to be a bad witch so she is going to leave that behind.  Problem is she can't let go of her power entirely because if she does, she will be defenseless when her coven comes looking for her.  I liked all of her new friends.  It was really a typical way kids 'welcome' new kids into the school.  I was so glad she found a fast and true friend.  I can't wait to see what happens next to all the characters.
This was a 4/5.  I will absolutely read the next in the series to see what happens!

The Last Letter by Kathleen Shoop

The Last LetterBook Description:
Katherine wouldn’t have believed it if she hadn’t found the letter...

Katherine Arthur's mother arrives on her doorstep, dying, forcing her to relive a past she wanted to forget. When Katherine was young, the Arthur family had been affluent city dwellers until shame sent them running for the prairie, into the unknown. Taking her family, including young Katherine, to live off the land was the last thing Jeanie Arthur had wanted, but she would do her best to make a go of it. For Jeanie's husband Frank it had been a world of opportunity. Dreaming, lazy Frank. But, it was a society of uncertainty—a domain of natural disasters, temptation, hatred, even death.
Ten-year-old Katherine had loved her mother fiercely, put her trust in her completely, but when there was no other choice, and Jeanie resorted to extreme measures on the prairie to save her family, she tore Katherine’s world apart. Now, seventeen years later, and far from the homestead, Katherine has found the truth – she has discovered the last letter. After years of anger, can Katherine find it in her heart to understand why her mother made the decisions that changed them all? Can she forgive and finally begin to heal before it’s too late?

My Thoughts:
This was a wonderfully surprising book.  Katherine resents her mother.  Jeanie is Katherine's mother and she didn't want to take her family from the high life to the prairie.  Still she does it because she must.  Though her husband Frank is a lazy and not at all what she needs, Jeanie is determined to make her marriage work.  Through letters, Katherine learns why her mother made the decisions she did for all of them, and maybe she can work past her anger at the woman she thought she knew.
I honestly wasn't sure when I started reading this if I was going to like this or not.  Getting into the book, I couldn't hardly put it down.  I felt so bad for Jeanie.  Her husband infuriated me.  Though I did understand the wanting to to keep the marriage together, I'm not sure I could have endured what she did.  It was also bittersweet to know that it was Katherine was learning about her mother this way.  You could understand Katherine's feelings as well.  She had no choice in what happened nor did she like it.  This isn't a warm fuzzy feeling book but more of a real life story that was told very, very well.A solid book, 4/5.

Cloak of the Light by Chuck Black

Cloak of the Light (Wars of the Realm, #1)Book Description:
Author of the popular Kingdom Series returns with this thrilling new novel for young adults.

Tragedy and heartache seem to be waiting for Drew Carter at every turn. Sydney Carlyle, a mysterious and elusive girl offers encouragement through her faith, but Drew is too logical and scientific to believe that her prayer of healing was anything but coincidental in the restoration of his eyesight. As his sight returns, he discovers that the accident has heightened his neuron activity, giving him skills and sight beyond the normal man. When he begins to see fierce invaders that no one else can see, he questions his own sanity, and so do others. But is he insane or do the invaders truly exist? The only one who can help him, his genius friend Benjamin Berg, has disappeared. In Drew's quest to find Ben, he discovers that the invaders themselves are at war, for his efforts to thwart the devastating actions caused by the dark invaders are aided by invaders with a different nature. Time grows short as the dark invaders close in on Drew. With skills that no other man possesses, and help from Benjamin and Sydney, Drew initiates a plan to expose the invaders to the world.

My Thoughts:
This was a good one.  Drew lost his dad at a young age.  His dad's friend steps up and helps Drew and his mother in any way he can, including being a mentor to Drew.  Once Drew excels at a sport, tragedy strikes again and he is forced to move past it to continue with his life.  Once he makes it through to college with his best friend and the 'elusive' girl from high school both there with him, everything changes.  He sees things no one else can and he must find his best friend and figure out exactly what he is seeing and how to stop them.
I really liked the way the 'back story' was done in this.  Drew has been through so much heartache but he was still raised to be a responsible man.  His mother and Jake both did a lot to make sure he understood integrity and respect.  I loved how the story hit a new speed once Drew started seeing things.  I love how the author shows Sydney's desire to keep separate and that it wasn't an easy choice not to just go with what she wanted.  I think the author has a unique concept on this one and I am excited to read the next in this series!
I rate this a 4/5.  It took a bit to get to the 'meat' of the story, but once there it was good.

Blind Trust by Sandra Orchard

Blind TrustBook Description:
Kate Adams had no idea she was carrying counterfeit money, and she can't believe that it came from her sweet neighbor. Or that it lands her in the middle of another one of Detective Tom Parker's investigations. Determined to prove her neighbor's innocence, Kate stumbles into a pit of intrigue that is far deeper than a two-bit counterfeit operation--and strikes too close to home for comfort. As family secrets come to light, her world--and her budding romance with Tom--begin to crumble. To Kate, it's clear that she won't be safe until she uncovers all of Port Aster's secrets. But is it too late for her and Tom?
Award-winning author Sandra Orchard draws readers into a world of rogues, red herrings, and romance as she unfolds the continuing story of amateur sleuth Kate Adams.

My Thoughts:
This was a great book.  Kate and Tom are back.  Kate is picking up groceries for her neighbor when she is 'taken aside' for paying with counterfeit bills.  Tom is the officer that responds to the call and while he doesn't believe that Kate had anything to do with counterfeiting she has landed herself in the middle of another investigation.  Kate is determined to prove her elderly neighbor isn't in on the counterfeiting and Tom wants to keep her out of harm's way.  The deeper she digs into the lies, the more tangled the webs become and the more she needs to trust Tom, but can she?
I love the characters in these books.  Tom and his family are so lovable.  I like how they have taken up with Kate, though she and Tom aren't actually dating.  His father is protective of her, his nephews adore her and his sister is becoming fast friends with her.  I also like that while it is obvious that Kate and Tom belong together, it isn't easy.  There is always something between them, an investigation, secrets, lies, etc.  The story is great and I wasn't ready for it to end so hopefully the next will be out soon!
I rate this a 5/5.  I absolutely cannot wait for the next in Ms. Orchard's series!

A Place in His Heart by Rebecca DeMarino

A Place in His Heart (The Southold Chronicles, #1)Book Description:
Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Barnabas Horton is still in love with his deceased wife and needs only a mother for his two young sons. And yet these two very different people with very different expectations will take a leap of faith, wed, and then embark on a life-changing journey across the ocean to the Colonies. Along the way, each must learn to live in harmony, to wait on God, and to recognize true love where they least expect to find it.
This heartfelt tale of love and devotion is based on debut author Rebecca DeMarino’s own ancestors, who came to Long Island in the mid-1600s to establish a life–and a legacy–in the New World.

My Thoughts:
This was a good historical book.  Mary doesn't want to marry someone arranged by her father, she wants to marry for love.  Barney needs to marry for his children but is still in love with his deceased wife.  The situation works well for both of them.  Following God's will leads them to the new world and hopefully to a new love. The author did a good job with these characters.  Mary's turmoil and hurt are understandable.  I really wanted to be mad at Barney for some of the things that happened, but the author did a great job with him too.  Though Mary doesn't understand his motivation, as the reader you see his hurt and feelings for his late wife.  I did like that faith was central to the whole story and how it isn't an easy thing.  There are going to be more books in this series and I cannot wait to read more of this story.
This is a 4/5, solid Christian historical romance.

The Soul of the Sun by Genevieve Crownson

The Soul of the Sun (The Argos Dynasty)Book Description:
“The hands of time turn on the face of the sun. Only you can move them. If the Watcher controls the hands of the clock he can go anywhere, past or future-- and destroy our planet.”
Since the days of ancient Greece, the Argos dynasty has kept a secret, a mystery passed down through their descendants from generation to generation, in the hopes that the forces of good can stop the evil destruction of planet Earth.
Margaret Ingall is harboring that secret. Time is running out for the descendants of the Argos. They know a great healer and time traveler will be born of their blood. But the only person that knows whom they will call “the soul of the sun” is Margaret’s sister, Abigail. Before she can reveal the healer’s identity, disaster strikes…
Evil stalks them, watching and waiting to find out which member of her family has the ultimate power. Is it Margaret’s own child? Or her beloved granddaughter? Or even herself? Their only clue is a powerful protective amulet that will lead them all in a cat-and-mouse game to discover secrets as ancient as time.
If the Watcher discovers the truth before they do, all will be lost.
Fate, time and love weave together in their struggle to fulfill their destiny. Will Margaret’s fears sabotage her family’s protection? Can the healer accept her gifts in time? And once the soul of the sun is finally revealed, will it be too late?
Her power is incredible. The sacrifices required of her are immense.
Will it be enough to stop the Watcher?

My Thoughts:
This is a good first book in a new series.  For generation upon generation, the descendants of the Argos have held a secret.  They are waiting for a great healer to be born and only Abigail knows who it will be.  She isn't able to tell and Margaret (her sister) and the family are left with only an amulet to lead them as evil lurks about them.
I liked Margaret.  She was a strong character who overcame a lot!  I thought the switching time periods would throw me but the author does a great job with this, making it flow seamlessly.  The Watcher is creepy and I love the way this character is written.  There is  a wonderful blend of laying the plot of a new series and keeping you interested in the current story.  The way this book ended, I can't wait for the next in the series!
This was a 4/5.  Good start to a new series.

A Season of Change by Lynette Sowell

A Season of Change (Seasons in Pinecraft, #1)Book Description:
Amish widower Jacob Miller believes it was a mistake to visit the Amish village of Pinecraft for winter vacation, especially after his daughter is struck by a car. Stranded in Sarasota until his daughter recovers, Jacob grows increasingly wary of events that unfold in his unfamiliar surroundings—including the strange curiosity of Englischer Natalie Bennett.
Natalie never thought her circus career as an aerial silks artist would end with a blown-out knee at the age of 25. She also never knew her late mother had a secret—that she was once Amish.
When Natalie meets the Millers at the Sarasota hospital, she is attracted to their warm hospitality and simple ways—and soon wonders if they can help her find her mother’s family. As Jacob and Natalie fall in love, their worlds collide. Will their differences tear them apart? Or will their love be strong enough to blend their clashing cultures?

My Thoughts:
This was a good one.  Natalie is a former circus performer who has recently learned her mother was born into an Amish family.  Jacob's daughter is hit by a car and in the hospital.  Natalie meets Jacob at the hospital where she is dressed as a clown.  She wants to know more about her ancestors and is intrigued by Jacob.  As the two of them become close, they realize how differently they live.
I had a little trouble getting into this book, but once I 'clicked' into it, I really enjoyed it.  I liked Natalie and how different her life has been in the circus.  The author does a great job with the character interactions and I would honestly really enjoy going to visit the community she describes.  Jacob is a good dad (and that in and of itself is a great character).  The story flowed well once I got into it and I will happily go back and visit this place in future books of hers!
I rate it a 4/5, it is a good Amish romance.

A Cast of Stones by Patrick W. Carr

Book Description:

The Fate of the Kingdom Awaits the Cast of Stones

In the backwater village of Callowford, roustabout Errol Stone is enlisted by a church messenger arriving with urgent missives for the hermit priest in the hills. Eager for coin, Errol agrees to what he thinks will be an easy task, but soon finds himself hunted by deadly assassins. Forced to flee with the priest and a small band of travelers, Errol soon learns he's joined a quest that could change the fate of his kingdom.

Protected for millennia by the heirs of the first king, the kingdom's dynasty nears its end and the selection of the new king begins--but in secret and shadow. As danger mounts, Errol must leave behind the stains and griefs of the past, learn to fight, and discover who is hunting him and his companions and how far they will go to stop the reading of the stones.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book.  Errol Stone is the town drunk.  He can't go a day without ale.  He isn't an impressive figure but his life is about to change.  He is hired by a church messenger to take a message to a priest that lives beyond the village and in a place that only Errol knows well.  He runs into trouble along the way and when he finally gets to his destination, he isn't in good shape.  He learns secrets about the kingdom and his destiny that will forever change everything.Initially I had issues getting into this book.  It was kind of a slow start but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it.  I loved watching the changes Errol had to go through.  The things he was certain of, weren't so certain.  What he thought he would spend his life doing and who he would be, were to DRASTICALLY change.  He was to be so much more than anyone ever expected him to be.  I loved the cast of characters and am anxious to see what happens next between some of them.  I want to know how the past is going to come back and how the future will work out! I rate this one a 4/5.  Only because it took me a while to get into the book, once I did, it was a solid 5/5.

First Bite by Dani Harper

Book Description:

Geneva “Neva” Ross doesn’t want to die. But now that she’s been turned into a werewolf against her will, she’ll do anything to protect her family and friends…even if that means taking her own life.
After witnessing Neva’s leap from a high ledge, Travis Williamson—a Changeling with a dark past—uses his powers to save her life. He feels a connection to the strong-willed woman whose eyes flash that familiar Changeling green. While Neva is hospitalized, Travis risks everything to kidnap her, knowing the approaching full moon will put everyone in jeopardy.
Bickering constantly to hide their growing attraction, Travis and Neva run from the authorities…and from Neva’s sinister sire, Meredith de la Ronde. Meredith delights in creating new shape-shifters and compelling them to do her dark bidding; now Neva must join Meredith’s murderous wolf pack…or die.
Intensely suspenseful with deliciously sexy twists, this paranormal romance—the first in (the title of series)—intertwines sensual passion with an epic, thrilling battle between good and evil.

My Thoughts:
This was a good paranormal book.  Neva is going to end her life.  She has to because she cannot become the monster she knows is inside of her.  Travis witnesses Neva's attempt and saves her (much to her dismay).  Not only that but he comes back to help her again and again.  Their attraction is growing as Travis shows her the ropes of being a Changeling, but there is something dark chasing Neva that neither of them are prepared to face.
I liked Travis.  He has a past and isn't a typical Changeling, but is still a good guy.  Neva's reaction to being a 'werewolf' in the beginning doesn't make sense but I enjoyed how the story unfolded.  I despised Meredith, but loved the twists throughout the book.  Leaving the ending hanging was not what I would have liked but I do hope the author writes the next in this series quickly.
I rate this one a 4/5.  I am more than ready to see how the rest of this story plays out.

Mom's Night Out by Tricia Goyer

Mom's Night OutBook Description:
Mom’s Night Out is a novelization of the hilarious family comedy that celebrates real family life—where everything can go wrong and still turn out all right.

All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation . . . a long-needed moms’ night out. But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for a few hours—what could go wrong?

Chronicling one night out gone awry, three harried moms, their husbands, a sister-in-law with a misplaced baby, a tattoo parlor owner, a motorcycle gang, and a bewildered cabbie all learn to embrace the beautiful mess called parenting. This book spotlights the unfulfilled expectations and serial self-doubts many moms feel . . . then reassures us that the key is raising kids in a loving home. Mom’s Night Out is an endearing, true-to-life comedy.

The MOMS’ NIGHT OUT film features Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy), Sean Astin (THE LORD OF THE RINGS), Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves RaymondThe Middle), Alex Kendrick (COURAGEOUS), Robert Amaya (COURAGEOUS), Andrea Logan White (REVELATION ROAD), Kevin Downes (COURAGEOUS), and platinum-selling country recording artist Trace Adkins (THE LINCOLN LAWYER).

My Thoughts:
This was a good one!  Three mothers who each think the others have it together and that there is something wrong with them, are having a mom's night out.  Allyson isn't as in control as everyone thinks and isn't overly happy with how life is.  Izzy is the mom of twins and so doesn't need to add to that, but has a secret that she has to tell her husband.  Sondra is the preacher's wife who doesn't have it together, but tries to make everyone, including herself believe she is.  As the three of them go out, Murphy's Law goes into effect.
Ok, I laughed out loud so many times at this book that my husband must think I'm crazy.  I like that each mother thinks the others are perfect and that there is something wrong with them.  It is a mindset that I can relate to as a mom.  I also liked that the dads were watching the kids and supportive with the night out.  The chain of events was a bit exaggerated, but it seems like something that would actually happen!  I can't wait to see the movie.
I rate it a 5/5.  It is supposed to be fiction but I completely related to a LOT of it :) Thank you to the publisher/author for the review copy of this book (via litfuse).  I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
